In the light of the global imperative to use our resources with great responsibility, the GAP Green innovation competition aims to support innovations that more effectively manage the use of water and energy by citizens and enterprises in Gauteng, whilst ensuring the preparedness and adaptability of the broader population to the effects of climate change and increased competition and associated costs for essential resources.

GAP Green is being run in partnership with the Climate Innovation Centre South Africa (CICSA) and Schneider Electric South Africa.

CICSA is a joint initiative by The Innovation Hub and infoDev of the World Bank to provide clean technology ventures with the knowledge, capital, and access to markets required to launch and scale their businesses. CICSA is part of a global network of Climate Innovation Centers in seven countries around the world.

All competition winners will be eligible for seed funding and incubation with CICSA. The top energy innovation will receive the Schneider Electric Award which will include engineering services, hardware and/or market advisory to support commercialisation.

GAP Green is hosted annually by The Innovation Hub Management Company (TIHMC) in Pretoria, South Africa. TIHMC is a subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA) which is an agency of Gauteng Provincial Government’s Department of Economic Development (GDED).

GAP Green opens for entries during April/May each year for approximately 5 weeks, and welcomes submissions from a diverse spectrum of participants including researchers, entrepreneurs and community-based organisations. Entries are then interrogated by expert internal and external adjudication panels to select 4 prize winners who will be offered seed funding and incubation starting in the following January with The Innovation Hub’s Maxum Business Incubator and Climate Innovation Centre.

South Africa’s scientists and engineers are amongst the top in the world. Yet few technologies are translated into commercial products/ services. The Innovation Hub Management Company (TIHMC) and Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) have joined forces to deliver a stimulating entrepreneurial workshop for potential technology entrepreneurs and startups. The workshop will assist potential GAP entrants with developing a strong proposal. It is also a prerequisite for those intending to enter the TIA Swiss SA Venture Leader programme. Local industry experts in technology commercialisation will share their knowledge on topics ranging from idea generation to funding a venture. Join us to take your technology idea or innovation to the next level.

The closing date for applications to join the training is 03 May  2019.

GAP Green is looking for innovative entrepreneurs that are looking to mainstream the adoption of green technologies amongst the majority of citizens as a way to increase access to resources at lower cost, minimise the effects of unmanaged pollution and waste, whilst reducing the financial and environmental impact of industry and government.

This year we are seeking strong technical solutions from universities and research institutes but also specifically invite submissions related to grassroots, community and social innovations that have been developed to address a local problem related to energy, water, housing, transport, sanitation. For example, the innovation may be an organizational innovation in the form of a local forum, NGO or CBO that has been created to coordinate and increase access to services by the community. Or it may be a technology or process developed locally to address a common issue in the area.

Through consultation with our partners, focus areas of particular interest this year include:

  • Innovative energy solutions for off-grid (or unstable grid) sites, especially waste-to-energy and solar
  • Energy efficient lighting and HVAC solutions for hospitals & clinics.
  • Novel water treatment approaches, especially point-of-consumption.
  • Water/ energy efficient materials, designs and construction methods for buildings
  • Other areas of interest for the Climate Innovation Centre include food security and alternative transport solutions.
